How We Turn Discarded Bottles into Luxury Candles

Every WOO Lucky Candle starts its life as a bottle destined for waste. A wine bottle from a restaurant. A vodka bottle from a bar. A beer bottle from a party. Before WOO, these would end up in landfill or at best, recycled at significant energy cost. Instead, they become the centrepiece of someone's living room.

Here's the full story of how we do it — and why it matters more than you might think.

Step 1: Collection by waste pickers

Our bottles are collected by waste pickers — people from vulnerable communities who depend on material recovery for their income. This is often invisible, precarious work. By partnering with waste collectors, WOO creates a stable, fairly paid supply chain that starts at the very bottom of the value chain and lifts people up from the first step.

Every bottle that enters our production process represents income for a collector. It's a small thing, but across hundreds of thousands of bottles, it adds up to something significant.

Step 2: Cleaning and sandblasting

Once collected, bottles are thoroughly cleaned and then sandblasted by hand by our glass artisans. Sandblasting gives WOO candles their signature soft, matte finish — elegant and understated, far removed from the glossy commercial aesthetic of mass-produced candles.

The sandblasting process requires real skill. Our artisans develop a feel for each bottle type — the pressure, angle, and duration required to achieve a perfectly even finish. This is not something a machine does better.

Step 3: Engraving

After sandblasting, the WOO logo is carefully engraved into the glass. This small detail is what transforms a repurposed bottle into a WOO product — and it's done by hand, one bottle at a time.

Step 4: Wax pouring

We use a carefully developed blend of plant-based waxes — primarily soy and beeswax — that burns cleaner and longer than paraffin, with minimal soot and no synthetic additives. Our wax specialists hand-pour each candle to an exact fill level, then allow it to set slowly for an even surface.

The wick is made from organic cotton — lead-free and sustainably sourced. A properly trimmed WOO wick produces a clean, steady flame and no black smoke.

Step 5: Fragrance

WOO's signature fragrances — Treasure and Tranquility — are developed with European perfumers using sustainably sourced fragrance oils. Treasure is warm, exotic, and luxurious: mandarin, black pepper, red berries, peony, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, amber, and musk. Tranquility is fresh and calming: citrus, cardamom, blackcurrant, lilac, honeysuckle, musk, and sandalwood.

The fragrance is added to the wax at a precise temperature to ensure even distribution and optimal scent throw throughout the full burn time.

Step 6: The lucky coin

Every WOO Lucky Candle contains a small lucky coin, placed at the base of the bottle before pouring. As the candle burns down over its 25, 60, or 90 hours, the coin is gradually revealed — a small, joyful surprise that marks the end of one use and the invitation to refill and begin again.

Step 7: Packaging

WOO candles are packaged in cylindrical boxes made from recycled cardboard. No plastic. No foam inserts. Just paper, cardboard, and care.

Why this matters

The upcycled candle market is growing fast, but most products on the market use the word 'upcycled' loosely. At WOO, the bottle is the product — not an afterthought. The entire design philosophy starts with the material, works back to the craft, and ends with something you're proud to give and proud to display.
